    We started changing the clocks several hundred years ago. The introduction of daylight saving time (the so-called ‘summer time’) was first proposed by the famous US politician and inventor Benjamin Franklin, back in 1784. He claimed that people wasted daylight hours lying in bed on summer mornings, and turning the clocks forward an hour would give an additional daylight hour in the evening and save electricity.

    Members of the British Parliament returned to this idea in the middle of the 20th century. To get more electoral votes, they offered to put this idea in practice and have longer and brighter evenings. Paradoxically, the same Britons proved at the beginning of the 21st century that changing time (especially the introduction of summer time) had a negative effect on people’s health and well-being, employee productivity and school children’s achievements. Time changes affect not only human health, but also the number of road accidents, which increases up to 9% in the first week after the introduction of summer time.

    People feel more sleepy and tired, causing more accidents during this period.

    In 2018, the European Sleep Research Society and the European Biological Rhythms Society presented to the European Commission recommendations on annual clock-time changes. In these recommendations, societies of scientists and doctors unequivocally state that clock-time changes twice a year has a negative effect on people’s health and well-being, and recommend choosing standard (winter) time, which is undoubtedly more beneficial to people’s health.

    Another important aspect is achievements and work performance. The introduction of daylight saving time significantly reduces the working capacity of adults in the first week. It should also be noted that the progress of school children is noticeably better in the week before the introduction of summer time, and worse after the clock is set forward. In the US, a study was conducted where daylight saving time was introduced in some states, but not in others. In states with daylight saving time, test results were significantly worse.

    The introduction of daylight saving time disrupts our biological clock, which can lead to:
