The introduction of summer time: history and present
Clockwise rotation started several hundred years ago. Daylight saving time (called "summer time") was first proposed by the famous US politician and inventor Benjamin Franklin, back in 1784. According to him, people waste daylight hours lying in bed on summer mornings, and turning the clocks forward an hour would make use of an additional, daylight hour in the evening and save electricity.
In the middle of the 20th century, representatives of the British Parliament returned to this idea, who wanted to convince the voters to implement this idea, thanks to which the evenings would be longer and brighter. Paradoxical, because the same Britons proved at the beginning of the 21st century that changing time (especially the introduction of summer time) has a negative impact on people's health and well-being, employee productivity, and schoolchildren's achievements. The time change affects not only human health, but also an increase in road accidents, which increases to 9 percent in the first week after the introduction of "Summer Time". This is because people feel more sleepy, not rested. Therefore, accidents increase significantly during this period.
2018 The European Society for Sleep Research and Biological Rhythm Research has submitted recommendations for time alternation to the European Commission. In these recommendations, societies of scientists and doctors unequivocally stated that changing the time twice a year has a negative effect on people's health and well-being, and recommended choosing standard (winter) time, which is undoubtedly more beneficial to people's health.
Another important aspect is achievements and work performance. After the introduction of daylight saving time, the working capacity of adults is significantly reduced in the first week. It should also be noted that the progress of schoolchildren is noticeably better in the week before the introduction of summer time, and worse when the time is turned forward. A study was conducted in America where some states had daylight saving time and others did not. In states that implemented daylight saving time, test results were significantly worse.
The introduction of daylight saving time disrupts our biological clock, which can cause:
- Lack of sleep and energy
- Lack of attention
- Disordered eating habits
- Deteriorated mood
- Impaired circulation
- Weakened immunity
- Increased risk of accidents
- Impaired assessment of various situations and decision-making
